PRESS: Rostelecom gets most suitable band to test 5G

MOSCOW, Jan 17 (PRIME) -- Russian state-controlled telecom operator Rostelecom has obtained frequencies to test 5G in the most suitable range of 3.4–3.8 GHz that will allow the company to fulfil in 2018 all the announced projects, business daily Kommersant reported on Wednesday.

The State Radio Frequency Commission did not make a common decision for the market on the bands of 3.4–3.8 GHz and 24.25–29.50 GHz due to objections raised by the Federal Guard Service and state corporation Roscosmos.

Rostelecom was the only operator whose application was fully satisfied, while the application of major mobile operator MTS for 27.50–28.35 GHz was declined, and the period to consider the application of mobile operator VimpelCom for 25.25–29.50 GHz and 3.4–3.8 GHz was extended.

“(VimpelCom) is fully prepared with its technological and expert resources to test 5G in the prospective frequency ranges. We’re already testing with our vendors the technologies that will be laid into the grounds of 5G,” a company spokesperson said.

A Rostelecom spokesperson said that the commission’s decision will allow the operator to fulfil all its voiced plans to create 5G trial zones.

Mobile operator MegaFon was the first to receive frequencies for 5G in July 2017.
